Description: |
This is a transcript of the TRC Section 29 in-camera inquiry for Johannes Velde van der Merwe, held in Durban on 10 July 1997. Van der Merwe is questioned about his knowledge of Operation Marion and how the fall-out from Caprivi trainees committing criminal offences was to be managed. He is also questioned about the role and structure of the State Security Council; the Trust Feeds massacre; his views on the efficacy of the "kitskonstabels" and the contention of the supposed TREWITS hit list. Van der Merwe also concedes that some types of South African Defence Force (SADF) training was provided to people in Namibia, Lesotho and Mozambique (RENAMO), as well as support for UNITA (Angola). This record was released by DOJ in response to Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) request SAH-2013-DOJ-0003. The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DOJ) has applied redactions to p.33-34 and p.51 of the transcript. SAHA has applied redactions to personal information on p.3 of the transcript. |
