Search
Use the following search conventions to increase the relevance and accuracy of your search results:
- To search for a phrase, use inverted commas to indicate that it is a phrase:
For example, search for "United Democratic Front" rather than simply entering United Democratic Front.
- To search for different forms of the same word, use an asterisk at the end of the root of the word:
For example, enter poison* to find poison, poisons, poisoner, poisoned, poisoning, etc.
- To search for a concept that may be represented by a number of different words, enter all the words you are looking for.
For example, if you are trying to find items about people who have been imprisoned, enter prisoners detainees and all results will feature at least one of these words.
- To search for items that definitely contain a number of words, you can use + before all those words that you are searching for.
For example, if you are trying to find items about children in detention, enter +children +detention
- To search for items that include one word but not another, use + to indicate the word you are looking for, and - to indicate the word you would like to exclude.
For example, if you are trying to find items about detainees but do not want information about child detainees, enter -child* +detainee*
- When searching for organisations or concepts that are abbreviated as acronyms, try searching for the full name as a phrase search, as well as the acronym.
For example, search for "United Democratic Front" UDF to search for records that contain either "United Democratic Front" or UDF
