Description: This article, titled "Bashed to death" appeared in the Daily Sun of April 16, 2008. A tragic reminder that the struggle for human dignity and democracy often involves the greatest sacrifice. The article refers to the death of an Anti-Privatisation Forum (APF) community activist in Sebokeng, Jan Matshobe, who was allegedly beaten to death by police after a series of protests. The APF commissioned an independent forensic autopsy on the body of Comrade Jan which found that his death was clearly the result of severe beating and blunt force trauma. No police personnel were ever arrested or charged despite several eye-witness accounts confirming that police were involved and a lengthy process of investigation by the Police's Independent Complaints Directorate. Comrade Jan is amongst several APF activists who died in highly suspicious circumstances over the course of ten years of struggle.
