On January 22, 1994 the Afrikaners' rebel radio station, Radio Pretoria, started broadcasting from Donkerhoek outside Pretoria. The broadcasting station on the barren flats of the Highveld was guarded by the former war veteran, Willem Ratte, and his Pretoria Boer Commando. Several efforts by the De Klerk government to silence the station's voice were prevented by the station being heavily fortified with sand sacks and armed guards.
