October 1993 was a time when the fighting between the ANC and the IFP was at its worst. Gangs from both sides fought pitch battles in the dusty streets of the squatter camps and townships on the East Rand. On October 16, 1993 a group of right-wingers under the command of Willem Ratte and the Pretoria Boer Commando moved into the besieged Kathlehong compounds where Zulu families were pinned down in the hostels under siege by the ANC's Young Lions. That morning Ratte and his men moved into the hostel and handed loads of food stuffs to the starving Zulu families living in the hostels.
