Description: This is a transcript of the TRC Section 29 in-camera inquiry of Jacques Hechter, held in Cape Town on 20 May 1997. This record discusses the identity of informers. Much of the inquiry is discussed the TRC legality and whether the inquiry were allowed to ask questions and informer identity. Captain Hechter’s legal team argued that the TRC was acting outside of its powers in his subpoena of the names of informants. There is a legal argument on the legitimacy and exactly how the hearing will be conducted. A ruling is passed by the commission on the argument(p.98). Most of the hearing is spent in legal argument. Hechter’s amnesty application relate to the murders of: 10 alleged ANC supporters at Bophutatswana; murder of Jeffrey Sibiya and another; the murders of Andrew Mokape, Jackson Make and Hal Sopala; the murder of of Piet Ntuli; Dr Fabian Ribeiro and his wife; Joe Masele; Sgt Motasi and his wife; unidentified member of Harold Sofolo Cell; and various unidentified activists. The attack on a garage in KwaNdebele; the attempted murder of Jerry Tibedi; the assault of Scheepers Morudi and assult of various unidentified activists. The record is in English and Afrikaans. This record was released by the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DOJ) in response to Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) request SAH-2013-DOJ-0003.
