Also founder member of the ANCYL. He as the first accused in the Rivonia treason trial and sentenced to life imprisonment in Robben Island.
After his release from prison in 1990, he was elected Deputy President of the ANC and in 1991 succeeded his ailing friend and comrade as President-General of the ANC.
In 1994, after the victory of the ANC in the first democratic elections held in this country, he became President of (the new) South Africa.
