The Sunday Times Heritage Project (STHP) collection includes a wide range of material collected toward the Sunday Times newspaper’s Heritage Project. The STHP was completed in collaboration with the South African History Archives, and released during the newspaper’s centenary celebrations. It set out to commemorate remarkable people and events selected from different arenas of South Africa’s past; subjects include Enoch Mgijima and the Bulhoek massacre, Athol Fugard, Nontetha Nonkwenkwe, Raymond Mhlaba, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the TRC, Happyboy Mgxaji, George Pemba, the Eastern Cape beach invasion, Mohandas Ghandi, Duma Nokwe, Tsietsi Mashinini, Brenda Fassie, Bethuel Mokgosinyana and the Orlando Pirates, Lilian Ngoyi, John Vorster Square and death in detention, Raymond Dart, racial classification, Cissie Gool, Isaac Wauchope and the sinking of the SS Mendi, Ingrid Jonker, Mannenberg, the Purple March, Olive Schreiner, Basil D’Oliveira, the first trans Africa flight, Alan Paton, Albert Luthuli, Bessie Head, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. These subjects were memorialized in a series of public art pieces built nationwide. The project was extended and made accessible via a range media, such as radio, DVD, the web, as well as an oral history and heritage project for schools. |
