Abstract: In 1997 a group of churches in the Johannesburg-Pretoria region came together to discuss how to respond to the challenge of the institution of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). After the publication of the Final Report of the TRC in 1998 the focus of the group turned towards the challenge of reconciliation as it arose from the findings and recommendations of the TRC. In 2000 a group of 60 church persons representing 40 churches formulated and endorsed the document “The Challenge of Reconciliation”.
