Description: |
This black and white photograph of striking railway workers signing back on to work was taken by Eric Miller for Afrapix in 1987. This came after the end of the biggest (about 18000 workers), and longest (3 months) strike in the history of the South African public service at the time. The victory for members of the South African Railway and Harbour Workers Union (SARHWU) came after months of police harassment and conflict which left a number of workers dead and many detained. This photograph was digitised by Africa Media Online (AMO) in 2009.
