Description: |
This is a digital photograph of electricity being reconnected. One of the Anti-Privatisation Forum's (APF's) most successful and popular campaigns was entitled 'Operation Khanyisa ('Operation Turn On'), which the APF alongside its Soweto community affiliates initiated in the early 2000s. In response to massive cut offs of electricity supply to poor households that simply could not afford to pay increasing costs, Operation Khanyisa - undertaken by trained activists - effectively stymied the state's intense efforts to enforce full cost-recovery of one of the most basic needs of life.
