Description: |
This is a digital born photograph of police at the candlelight march at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). As part of the mobilisations/activities of social movements during the lead-up to the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in August 2002, the Anti-Privatisation Forum (APF) initiated and organised a candlelight march from Wits University to the Johannesburg Central Police Station. The purpose of the march, which was joined by many South African and international academics, was to highlight the South African government's crackdown on freedom of expression in the lead-up to the WSSD and to demand the release of over 50 APF members being held in the Johannesburg Central Police Station after an attempted march a few days earlier.
