Description: |
This is a digital born photograph of Emily Lengolo's casket being placed into the ground by Anti-Privatisation Forum (APF) women activists. One night in February 2003, APF and Orange Farm activist, Emily Lengolo, was gunned down in her home; the gunman escaped, taking nothing. Emily had become particularly vocal about corruption and maladministration within the local municipality and was a constant thorn in the side of the local councillor who had previously threatened her and other community activists for publicly exposing corruption. Emily's Funeral service was attended by hundreds of APF activists and community residents and was followed by a mass march to the local police station to demand a special investigation into her murder. Like so many other activists deaths, no one has ever been arrested.
